How It Came About

At 86 years old, I was at a crossroads in my life; I was recuperating from two serious
and debilitating operations, in pain, learning to walk again, and facing a future that seemed rather meaningless. My 23 year-long deep involvement with our community was coming to an end and at the same time, my other love, art, seemed rather pointless; the buying public had all but disappeared.

My son Anton, an excellent cook in his own right, had flown up from Cape Town to support me in my ongoing rehabilitation, cooking and freezing endless meals, and generally helping out. Standing in the kitchen one evening he said: ”Gosh Ma,
I wish there was a source of ideas to help with the preparation of vegetables.” And
that is how the idea of a vegetable cookbook was born. Quick and easy ways to
serve delicious vegetables. Both Anton and Chris, my son in law, have given their whole-hearted support and help to this project. Chris will do the design of the book, they will help with the testing of some recipes, and on their insistence, I will do some illustrations. I enjoyed the whole process, and I sincerly hope you will love cooking out of this book!
